How should a brand choose fabric weight and GSM for a custom hoodie?
There is no single best fabric weight or GSM for every custom hoodie.
The right choice depends on the intended season and climate, whether the hoodie will be worn as a light layer or outer layer, the desired silhouette, hand feel, decoration method, target price, and end-use requirements.
A lighter fabric may suit layering, indoor wear, or transitional collections, while a heavier fabric can provide more body and support a structured or oversized silhouette. The decision should be based on the complete fabric and garment design rather than GSM alone.
Factors to evaluate together
Silhouette and fit
Consider whether the design should feel fluid, relaxed, structured, cropped, or oversized. Fabric weight, drape, pattern dimensions, and construction should support the intended shape.
Composition and construction
Review fiber composition, yarn, knit structure, density, stretch, recovery, and the interior construction. Brushed fleece and loopback fabrics can behave differently even at a similar GSM.
Finish and decoration
Check surface finish, hand feel, washing direction, printing, embroidery, and other decoration requirements because they can affect material selection and the finished appearance.
A higher GSM does not automatically mean better quality
A higher GSM does not by itself prove that a hoodie will be warmer, more durable, or higher quality. Two fabrics with the same GSM may differ in softness, warmth, drape, stretch, surface appearance, and performance because of their composition, knitting, density, brushing, washing, and other finishes.
If durability, shrinkage, pilling, colorfastness, or another performance requirement is important, the requirement and evaluation method should be confirmed separately rather than inferred from GSM.
