A Zip Turns a Hoodie Into a Layer

Pullovers get pulled over your head; zips get worn open over a tee, closed against the wind, halfway as a collar. That flexibility is exactly why the front closure is the part we obsess over: a full-length zip that runs true, tape that doesn’t ripple, and a hem join that stays flat after washing. This sample pairs that with raglan sleeves, an adjustable drawcord hood, and split kangaroo pockets — the zipper divides one big pouch into two usable hand pockets. Navy, quiet hardware, nothing shouting.

Where the Work Sits

The body opens with a full-length zipper and splits the kangaroo pocket into left and right entries, so hands go in without fighting the closure. Long raglan sleeves keep the shoulder line smooth whether the zip is up or open. The hood threads through tipped drawcords that adjust and hold. Ribbed cuffs and hem finish the shape — matched to the body shade on this sample, since the zip itself is the design statement here.

Four Details We Argue About at the Sampling Table

Where the zip meets the hem is a measured decision. The zipper stops short of the ribbed hem by a fixed allowance, and that junction is where zip hoodies usually pucker. We set the stop height on the sample, secure the tape ends with bartacks, and check the join lies flat with the zip both open and closed — because buyers see both.

Zip tape can twist after washing. The tape and the front panels are different materials with different relaxation, and an unbalanced front seam shows itself as a waving placket after the first wash. We equalize feed tension on both sides, pre-shrink per the fabric program, and inspect the placket flat on the washed sample — not just the fresh one.

Zipper pull and teeth are specified, not assumed. Teeth gauge, tape color, puller shape and finish all go into the tech pack — the sample wears a metal tooth with a matching puller. We run open-close cycle checks on the bulk lot and confirm the slider holds at any height without sliding down on its own.

A split pocket is a pattern change, not a cut. Dividing the pouch means each side needs its own stable entry and reinforcement, or the openings stretch into ovals. We bartack both pocket mouths and check the pocket bags hang free of the zipper tape, so nothing snags when hands go in.

Fabric Directions We’d Develop First

On the sample this reads as a smooth fleece-face knit with a comfortable body weight — the kind of surface that layers under a jacket without bulk. Composition and weight aren’t fixed; this is a custom-fabric program. Directions we’d typically develop for a zip-front build: a 300–350 gsm fleece for three-season layering, or a 380–450 gsm heavy fleece where the zip hoodie is the outer layer. Fiber content, GSM target and finishing (enzyme wash, anti-pilling) are agreed in your tech pack, and bulk fabric is matched against the approved sample — not a photo.

Fit and Sizing

What the photos show: a straight, easy body with raglan sleeves and ribbed cuffs and hem. On zip-front styles, the front length and the zipper length are decided together — we verify the stop height against your hem spec on the sample. Your size range and grading follow your tech pack; send the size chart with the enquiry and the balance gets checked on the sample across the run.

Questions Buyers Ask About This Zip Hoodie

Can we specify the zipper brand or teeth type?

Yes — zipper specification is a tech-pack line, not a factory guess. Teeth gauge, metal or plastic, tape color and puller finish are all selectable, and we match the tape dye to your body fabric or a standard stock shade if you prefer. Whatever is chosen gets cycle-tested on the sample before bulk.

Will the zipper shade match the fabric exactly?

The tape can be dyed to your approved lab dip, though tape and face fabric take dye differently — we check the pair under the same light on the sample and record the tolerance you accept. If your market expects a visible contrast zip instead, that’s a styling call, and it costs nothing to lock in early.

How does this differ from your pullover styles?

The zip changes the pattern, not just the trim: the front splits into two panels, the pocket divides, and the hem junction needs its own finishing. If your range needs a pullover twin, the raglan pullover with contrast rib below is cut from the same shoulder logic — many programs run both and share the size set.
